“Occupy The Pride” to bring Occupy presence, dialogue and celebration to pride parade
Portland, Ore., June 4 — Occupy The Pride Portland, an ad hoc action group connected to the Occupy Portland movement, plans for a day of educational outreach and visibility activities on Sunday, June 17, coinciding with the annual Pride NW gay pride parade and festival in downtown Portland.
Organizers hope to bring attention to the wide range of human rights issues faced by queer people of color and youth, as well as LGBTQAIP immigrants and asylum-seekers, and victims of domestic violence who are identified as sexual minorities. Some of such issues include the exclusion of sexual minorities and immigrants from the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s refusal to comply with the Prison Rape Elimination Act in its immigrant detention facilities, and locally, the continuing challenges faced by members of the queer communities in accessing social services, healthcare, identification documents, and housing.
Occupy The Pride will be present at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park during the pride parade to provide “alternative, non-commercial celebrations” as well as teach-ins and general outreach engagement.
